FlexiGrip - A No-Nail Can Opener

Project type

Engineering Project

Date

Spring 2024

Chemotherapy often results in brittle nails and painful nail bed injuries for cancer patients, as it targets rapidly dividing cells, including those in fingernails. This makes routine tasks like opening a soda can difficult and uncomfortable. As part of my Manufacturing and Design Communications (E29) course, I along with two other teammates developed a finger-extension product for cancer patients which enables convenient and effective opening of cans and bottles to prevent nail bed damage and to protect brittle nails. I was in charge of engineering drawings, manufacturing (PLA and waterjet), and our showcase presentation slides.

My Responsibilities:
Technical:
- Designing engineering drawings in SolidWorks
- Polishing final prototype design in SolidWorks CAD
- Cutting metal "can opening" pieces using Fablight
Project Management:
- Delegating deliverables and action items, ensuring deliverables meet project requirements and standards. Project deliverables included: proposal and initial pitch deck, mid-semester check-in review, final presentation (slides and oral presentation), final design showcase.
- Scheduling team meetings around teammates' schedules
- Documenting progress via a custom spreadsheet logbook
